Charity of the year
Trader Media Group has always given to charities, both at a Group level and through local centres and different products. We are pleased to announce the entire TMG team will join together this year to support national fundraising efforts on behalf of Samaritans. Each TMG centre will have the opportunity to work locally with their Samaritans branch, in addition to supporting our company national fundraising efforts. Supporting local Samaritans branches is also the right choice to help the people and communities we serve.
All this exposure means a huge number of people will be able to learn about the important emotional support provided by Samaritans.
Samaritans is a charity that provides completely confidential emotional support 24 hours a day in the UK and Republic of Ireland by phone, face to face, letter, email and now text.
What does Samaritans do?
Samaritans believes that given the time and space to work problems or difficulties through in confidence, people can find an inner strength that lets them find their own way forward. Samaritans believes that being listened to in confidence, without fear of being judged, can alleviate feelings of distress, including those which may lead to suicide. Samaritans receives 4.8 million contacts a year, that’s one contact every seven seconds.
Why Samaritans is important?
• In the UK and Republic of Ireland suicide is the leading cause of death of men aged 15-34
• 13 million working days are lost through stress each year, equating to a loss of £3.7 billion to the UK work place.
• By 2020, the World Health Organisation projects that depression will be the second most common cause of illness in the world, surpassing heart disease, AIDS and deaths in war
• 80-90% of people with major depression can be treated successfully but because of the stigma associated with admitting to emotional difficulties, only about a third of those with depression seek help
